Mission Statement

The Sudbury Indoor Tennis Club is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote active living and enhance the social and physical well-being of its members by maintaining an excellent tennis facility and providing affordable tennis to all ages and play levels in a safe, friendly and sporting environment.

Facility

The club has four indoor courts located in an insulated bubble. The courts were resurfaced in 2016. The facility has proper LED court lighting, is heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer. A fifth outdoor court is available for summer use.
Men’s and women’s change rooms with showers as well as a small lounge are also available for member’s use.

History of the Club

Indoor tennis started back in the 1980’s in Sudbury. The first bubble went up on the Alder street courts on December 20, 1992. Jim Richardson supervised the building of the bubble footings, the enclosed ramp access and the furnace and blower pads. A ‘new’ insulated bubble was erected in 2000. Joanne and Ron Petit, Jim Richardson & Frank Bell played the first match that December. The official ribbon cutting occurred in January 1993. The loan from members was payed off in 1999 and the ‘mortgage’ was burned. Jim Richardson and Ray Savignac won OTA doubles tournaments across the province 13 times. “Leo the Legend” Ptaszynski was 81 and played tennis and coached juniors up until his sudden death Dec 23, 2005.

Court Conduct

Sportsmanship
  • Set a positive example.

  • Be considerate and respectful of others, on and off the courts.

  • Introduce yourself to new Members.

  • Play fairly, acknowledge good shots and shake hands after matches.

  • Playing up and playing down: Use good judgement when playing with less experienced players — perhaps “toning down” so that your serves and returns are not a danger to less experienced players. Give them the opportunity to learn from you. Chances are you progressed because other advanced players gave you a chance to learn. “Pass it on” in friendship and sportsmanship.

  • Follow the directions of Club Coordinators at the courts.

Etiquette
  • Don’t talk or distract fellow players while a point is in progress.

  • If a stray ball comes on to your court while a point is in play, call a “let” and replay the point.

  • Your opponent’s shot is “in” unless you very clearly see the ball bounce outside the line. Balls that touch the outside edge are “in”.

  • Always play safe. Loose balls on the court can be a danger to your partner or opponent. When you see a loose ball bounce within the playing zone, call a “let” and stop play so someone does not injure themselves. Winning a point is never that important.

  • Always wait for play to stop before crossing at the back of a court or returning stray balls to where they belong.

  • Return balls to other courts only when others are prepared to receive them or carefully return them along the fence line so as not to interrupt any play on court or present a danger to others.

  • Return balls directly to the server. Just hitting balls to the back of the court is not acceptable.
